Today's NYTimes' National Briefing column has a small piece from the AP about another conduit betweeen Jack Abramoff and the Republican Congress pleading guilty to corruption charges today. Its interesting stuff, but some very important information seems to be missing.

See if you can solve the puzzle below the fold------

The Briefing piece reads, in its entirety, as follows:

Ex-Staff Member to Plead Guilty in Lobbyist Case

A former Congressional staff member, Mark Zachares, will plead guilty today to accepting $40,000 in money and tickets to sporting events and concerts in exchange for helping the lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Mr. Zachares’s lawyer said. Mr. Abramoff and his lobbying team supplied Mr. Zachares with tickets on about 40 occasions from August 2002 to February 2004, says a 10-page document filed in the case. The document also said Mr. Zachares received $10,000 in wire transfers from Mr. Abramoff in January and February 2002 through a nonprofit foundation the lobbyist controlled.

A congressional staff member. Abramoff. Money and tickets. $10,000 cash. What's missing?

Answer: What Congressman? What party?

It turns out that Zachares worked for a Republican Congressman. Surprise! It was Don Young from Alaska. Zachares, formerly the labor secretary for the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, had been pushed by Abramoff to be named head of the Interior Department's Office of Insular Affairs. When this did not happen Abramoff looked for another angle to get his guy installed at a position with influence over the same department. Enter Don Young, Republican from Alaska. From the Washington Post in 2006:

Zachares did not get the Interior position, but in 2002 he landed a job with a congressman important to Abramoff -- Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), who served on the House Resources Committee, which oversees Indian and insular affairs. Zachares joined Abramoff on his annual Scotland golf trip the next year.

Now the story is more accurate and informative. When we have corruption and a guilty plea, why won't they give us the Republican involved?
